SpLD & Assessment
Specialist understanding of dyslexia and literacy-related difficulties, and of what assessment should actually tell you: how your child learns, and what should happen in school as a result.
Beyond the score
A useful assessment doesn’t just produce numbers. It explains the pattern behind them: where a child’s strengths are, where the difficulties sit, how processing and memory affect learning, and what that means for teaching, support and exams.
I hold the PGCert Specialist Teaching for Literacy-Related Difficulties (DL), CPT3A, Level 7 psychometric assessment training and BPS RQTU registration (Test User: Educational). I have also led access arrangements and literacy provision in schools for many years.
What good SpLD support looks like
- Is the intervention targeting the specific difficulty identified, or is it generic “reading support”?
- Is it delivered often enough, by someone trained to deliver it?
- Is progress measured, and does the plan change if it isn’t working?
- Are reasonable adjustments in place across subjects, not only in English?
- Are strengths recognised as well as difficulties?
Three different things, clearly separated
Specialist Learning Profile
My own educational and psychometric assessment of literacy, attainment, working memory, processing and patterns of strength and difficulty, with a written report and recommendations. Tests are chosen to answer the referral question.
Not a diagnostic dyslexia assessment.
